Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham in 2022

2022 promises to be a great year for sport here in the UK.  We’re hosting the women’s Euro 2022 football championships, the 6 nations rugby and even the Commonwealth Games that are coming to Birmingham (and that’s not even mentioning the FIFA World Cup taking place in Qatar which will no doubt have us all glued to our TV screens!).

First held in 1930, the Commonwealth Games is a multi-sport international event held across 10 days, and involves athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.  Whilst the Commonwealth Games is not as big as the Olympics due to the fact that athletes are only present from Commonwealth nations, it really is a celebration of sport, and is often called the ‘Friendly Games’.  Around 4,500 athletes will compete in Birmingham, and will be officiated by around 1,500 personnel (compared to the Olympics where around 10,000 athletes participate and are officiated by approx 5,000 people).

Suffice to say that, here at Event Hire UK, we’re very much looking forward to the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham – it’s on our doorstep!

Some familiar venues to us are hosting the events.  These include Alexander Stadium for the athletics (and opening / closing ceremonies), Coventry Arena (judo, wrestling and Rugby 7s), the NEC (badminton, boxing, netball and gymnastics), and Edgbaston for cricket, amongst many others.  We can’t wait!

Of course, as with all major international sporting events such as these – whatever sport it is – there’ a huge amount of planning and infrastructure that needs to be put into place in order for the event to take place successfully.  This includes everything from the quality of the venues, policing, transport links, hotels and accommodation, athlete welfare and – where we come in – behind-the-scenes hospitality, temporary media centres, temporary changing rooms and so on.

It is the work behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed, yet is critical to the success of the event, and only be working closely together with other agencies and organisations does an event of this magnitude come together.

But what type of equipment hire for sports events is Event Hire UK able to supply?

Firstly, when it comes to temporary media centres, we can offer professional desks and tables, executive chairs and even a press conference desk for the interview area where required.  We can also provide banks of temporary lockers where members of the international media can put their personal belongings during their stay to keep them safe.
